“The Addams Family” by United Artists Releasing.
America’s favorite creepy family returns just in time for this Halloween season with The Addams Family by United Artists Releasing. The film centers around Gomez & Morticia Addams trying to prepare for a large family event that they intend to host. If you’re familiar with the characters, then you already know that madness and funny gags take form for cheap laughs. While the movie has its endearing moments, sadly there isn’t enough laughs during this very thin run time.
Charlize Theron plays Morticia and Oscar Isaac plays Gomez. Both actors portray their respective roles well but unfortunately their characters play more of supporting roles to the children played by Chloe Grace Moretz & Finn Wolfhard. Chloe steals the film with her interpretation of Wednesday. Thankfully, the creators gave her character funny memorable one-liners and moments. The antagonist of the film is where the film begins to fall apart. Once her character came into the story, the film suddenly began to pull elements from Tim Burton‘s cult classic ‘Edward Scissorhands’.
In that film we see what it feels like to be an outcast and integrate into a community. However, ‘Edward Scissorhands’ succeeded while this one struggles to capture that same creepy magic. Despite these issues, The Addams Family does provide fun entertainment for the whole family during this Halloween season. Be sure to stay during the end credits for a fun surprise sing-a-long of the iconic theme song.
